The
missions of the Belgian Federal Science Policy office are exercised
on three levels: scientific activities, technical activities and
cultural activities. The Department of Space Research and Applications
of the Belgian Federal Science Policy office is in charge of managing
the Belgian (public) participation in R&D activities carried out
by industry and Belgian scientists in space-related matters. These
activities are conducted primarily within the framework of the
international organisations to which Belgium belongs (e.g.: the
European Space Agency (ESA), the European organisation for the
exploitation of meteorological satellites (EUMETSAT), or within
the framework of bilateral agreements (e.g. with France on SPOT).
The themes covered vary widely: generic technology, launchers,
microgravity, space sciences, Earth observation, telecommunication,
navigation, manned spaceflight, the International Space Station.
In the field of Earth observation in particular, the Belgian Federal
Science Policy office strongly recognises the importance of the
transformation of data into useful information products, translated
e.g. into the set up of a national Earth observation application
programme (STEREO) and a strong involvement in the GMES initiative.
