Universities and research institutes all over Europe play an important role in the research performed on board the Space Station. European scientists are involved in designing experiments to be carried out in the research facilities of the ISS. They will also help monitor the experiments while on board, and analyse the experiment data.

However, Europeans will not only be working on the ground, but also on board the Space Station. The European Astronaut Corps consists of 16 highly qualified and trained astronauts, and when on board the Station, they form a vital part of a large scientific team on Earth. On the ground all over Europe there are control centres and “User Support and Operation Centres” to support the ISS crew and to control and operate experiments and hardware on board the Station.
